What is the Word Unscrambler?

The Word Unscrambler is a powerful linguistic tool designed to take any jumbled string of letters and instantly discover every valid English word that can be formed from them.

  • Solve word games: Perfect for getting past tricky spots in Scrabble, Wordle, Anagrams, and crossword puzzles.
  • Expand vocabulary: Discover new words you never knew existed by seeing all possibilities organized by length.
How Does This Work?

Behind the scenes, the unscrambler analyzes your scrambled letters by breaking them down into a precise character count. It then scans our comprehensive database of over 10,000 valid English words.

The algorithm compares the letters required for each dictionary word against the letters you provided. If a word can be built using only your available letters (without reusing a letter more times than you provided it), it gets added to your results.

Why do some letters yield more words?

Common vowels (E, A, O) and frequent consonants (R, T, N, S) will naturally produce hundreds of combinations, while rare letters like Q, Z, or X will significantly narrow your results.

Strategy & Tips

Get more from every word game

Practical, game-specific strategy you can apply alongside the unscrambler — from rack management in Scrabble to opening moves in Wordle.

Scrabble strategy

  • Aim for "bingos" — using all seven tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus. An unscrambler is the fastest way to spot them from a difficult rack.
  • Memorise the high-value two- and three-letter words (QI, ZA, XU, JO, AX, OX). They let you play parallel to existing words and stack points.
  • Hold onto blanks and S tiles for high-leverage moments rather than spending them on low-scoring plays.
  • Balance your rack for vowels and consonants — a 4:3 or 3:4 split keeps bingos reachable. Use the "Contains" filter to test rack-balanced words.

Wordle strategy

  • Open with a vowel-heavy word that uses common letters — CRANE, SLATE, and AUDIO are popular because they reveal letter positions quickly.
  • Use the "Exact length" filter set to 5 alongside "Starts with" or "Contains" to list every valid guess that fits your green and yellow clues.
  • Avoid reusing grey letters. The tool only returns words formable from your known-good letters, so feed it those plus any remaining unknowns.
  • Once you have three or more confirmed letters, switch to guessing for information rather than the answer — eliminate possibilities faster.

Anagrams & puzzles

  • Look for common prefixes (RE-, UN-, IN-) and suffixes (-ING, -ED, -ER) first. Spotting one often reveals the base word instantly.
  • Group letters by vowel. Most English words alternate consonant-vowel patterns, so pairing each vowel with nearby consonants narrows the search.
  • For multi-word anagrams, try splitting the letters into two clusters and unscrambling each separately — the tool handles any letter count up to 15.
  • Practise with the "Required letter" filter to train your eye, mirroring the Spelling Bee format where one letter must appear in every answer.

Words with Friends tips

  • The board values differ from Scrabble — bonus squares are placed differently, so plan placement before committing to a word.
  • Defensive play matters: avoid setting up your opponent adjacent to triple-word or triple-letter squares.
  • The dictionary is slightly more permissive than Scrabble's, so when in doubt, run the letters through the unscrambler and verify each candidate.
  • Exchange tiles when your rack is vowel-heavy or consonant-heavy rather than forcing a low-scoring play.
